Mural Arts and Mural City Cellars team up for Mural Arts Red Wine

by: Jenny Donnelly Johnson

Amplifying Mural Arts Month spirit, this October we welcome a new collaboration with Mural City Cellars (MCC). Co-owners Nicholas and Francesca have partnered with Mural Arts Philadelphia for their co-branded wine. Sales will contribute to the vibrant public art scene in the city of Philadelphia. This new Mural Arts red wine was branded with artwork created by mural artist Donna Grace Kroh specially for Mural Arts Month 2023.

Mural Arts Red is 100% Chambourcin, a local varietal that grows just over the bridge in Swedesboro, NJ. The grapes were picked in the Fall of 2022, and the wine spent eight months aging in neutral French oak barrels at the winery in Fishtown. It’s fruit-forward and light with notes of cherry, raspberry, and pomegranate and tastes delicious with a slight chill.  The winery will sell the Mural Arts Month-themed wine, donating 15% per bottle for every sale.

Join us on October 15 from 2–6pm at the Mural City Cellars Wine Garden at 2211 Frankford Avenue for a toast to celebrate the new Mural Arts Red Wine and our partnership with Mural City Cellars! There will be live music, a food vendor, and artist activations, and we will—of course—be pouring the new wine and selling bottles for folks to take home.

We talked with Mural City Cellars co-owner Francesca Galarus to find out more about the company.

What can you tell us about Mural City Cellars?

Mural City Cellars is Philadelphia’s first urban winery. We make high-quality, fruit-forward, dry wines from fruit sourced within a 300-mile radius of the city. We work with local artists to create artwork for our labels, and a Community Supported Winery (CSW) program to give back to neighborhoods is baked into our business.

How did you come up with the name Mural City Cellars?

This decision was easy! When we moved here, Winemaker Nicholas Ducos was struck by all the beautiful public art in Philadelphia. Since Mural City Cellars is such a locally based business (we don’t even sell our wine outside of the suburbs), we wanted a name for our business that captured the spirit of the city.

How does a collaboration with Mural Arts Philadelphia show an affinity between your company and Mural Arts?

From the early stages of building our business, it was important to us to have a giveback program and be ingrained in our community. We’re proud to have donated more than $10,000 to local nonprofits, with a focus on the arts and neighborhood beautification and engagement, since opening our doors. This collaboration is a continuation of our efforts, and we are excited to explore these creative ways to help our city. Beyond that, it’s a true honor for our young company to work with such an established organization that has an impressive history and impact in our city.

What do you see is the future for your Mural City Cellars?

At almost three years in, we’ve grown Mural City Cellars to the production capacity that we had hoped for. We intend to keep MCC local and relatively small while still being able to make positive changes in our community. We are excited about what’s happening in the Northeastern region and we definitely want to help elevate and grow the PA wine scene.

Where can people buy your products?

Currently, bottles of the Mural Arts Red can be purchased at our Wine Garden at 2211 Frankford Avenue. After October 15, Mural City Cellars will be popping up all over the city until our permanent space at 1831 Frankford Avenue is ready to open. Follow us @muralcitycellars to see all our updates.

Additionally, two stores—the IGA in Fishtown Crossings and Local 44 at 44th and Spruce—are carrying the Mural Arts Red.
