Come Discover Cradle – Happy Hour September 26

by: Todd Bressi

September 26 | 5:30 to 7:30 pm | Jefferson Plaza | 12th and Market Streets

Mural Arts’ latest project in Center City, Cradle, is quietly tucked away inside the new East Market development, on a wall that faces the “Chestnut Walk” promenade that connects Chestnut and Market Streets – but is destined to become a landmark in its own right.

This extraordinary mural, made of ceramic tile imported from Portugal, was created by Lisbon-based visual artist, Diogo Machado, who works under the name “Add Fuel.” His work combines influences from traditional Portugese tile-making with contemporary graphic design, video games, comics and animation, creating a unique visual universe filled with eccentricity and joy. The mural was developed in partnership with National Real Estate Development and Jefferson University.

Cradle, part of the newly opened Jefferson Plaza, serves as a captivating embodiment of Philadelphia’s identity. Machado was inspired by the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works (his team took a day off during installation to visit) as well as themes related to Philadelphia being a cradle of innovation.

At a distance, the artwork appears as a mesmerizing tapestry of color and texture in the Portuguese tile tradition, but upon closer inspection the tile motifs reflect Philadelphia icons, paying tribute to Philadelphia’s history as a city of innovation and creativity. The color palette evokes a sense of warmth and familiarity associated with the city and its traditional building materials.

Join Market East and Mural Arts on September 26, 5:30 to 7:30 pm, at Jefferson Plaza, 12th and Market Streets for a happy hour event dedicated to exploring the story behind this signature project – with an on-site premiere screening of two short videos on the making of the mural, an informal q-and-a with Mural Arts’ director Jane Golden and project manager Todd Bressi, and a chance for you to share your own ideas about Philadelphia as a cradle of innovation. Food and drink will be available for purchase.

Special thanks to East Market, National Real Estate and Jefferson University.
