What’s Your Message?

Protests are full of powerful and creative statements, and last Saturday’s March for Science was no exception. In Philadelphia, sign-carrying crowds streamed through the city in the wake of a wide, white banner, proclaiming “SCIENCE NOT SILENCE.” At Mural Arts Philadelphia, we were so excited to see this sign, created at one of our Art of the Protest workshops.

It all started with a March 21 panel discussion in partnership with the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. Artists Olek and Michelle Angela Ortiz, Councilwoman Helen Gym, and Liza Goodell from Spiral Q—all active agents for social change—talked through their thoughts and experiences around art and protest. At events on March 24 and April 8, Signs of Solidarity co-led sign-making workshops with artists Sheldon Abba + Bruno Guerreiro and Martha Rich. Sign-making is all about speaking up and being part of the conversation, using visual language to turn up the volume.
