Opening: Yearbook

Part of a larger nationwide effort called For Freedoms, led by artists Hank Willis Thomas and Eric Gottesman, Yearbook is a collaboration with Philadelphia Photo Arts Center (PPAC) and students in our Art Education programs. During summer 2018, our Art Education students envisioned, sketched, and painted vivid photo backdrops inspired by the four freedoms articulated by FDR and later painted by Norman Rockwell: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear.

PPAC then sent three renowned Philadelphia photographers to each of the 12 Mural Arts program sites across the city, and photographed the students yearbook-style in front of their backdrops. In addition, PPAC Teaching Artists visited each Mural Arts class to teach photography basics, and lent students professional cameras to experiment with their own photographic voice. which will be displayed in PPAC’s gallery—and on 50 billboards throughout the city. Join us for the opening of the exhibition!
