At the Bartram’s Garden RiverFest & 6th Annual Tidal Schuylkill Boat Parade, artist Katie Bachler and her youth facilitators will be by the riverside with Listening School, a rolling mobile art cart. They will be helping visitors paint pictures, record stories, listen to the river, and celebrate Southwest Philadelphia. Take a Listening to the River Tour and find all the special spots along the banks, or get a stone-skipping lesson on a hidden pebble beach.
More about Listening School:
For the month of May 2016, artist Katie Bachler led art and story-collecting activities with children and adults in the area between Lindbergh Blvd and Kingsessing, and 49th and 67th Streets. Her mobile art cart, Listening School, unfolds to reveal a painting and drawing studio, and a mini-audio recording booth. A team of youth facilitators from John Bartram High School trained with her and co-led the activities and outreach as they toured the neighborhood. Later this summer, Katie Bachler will distribute a feelings map of the neighborhood created from the Listening School stories that shows the and experiences of people who live here.
