About the Project
In line with the longstanding tradition of Mural Arts’ community process, 76ers: Beyond the Court speaks to city history and pays homage to local heroes: the Philadelphia 76ers. Many hands took part in the creative process for the mural by artist Ernel Martinez, which responded to a design from local fifth grader Brendan Dougherty. Inspired by Dougherty’s graphic court layout and the prominent figures of the players, the colorful, prismatic 76ers: Beyond the Court includes iconic players Dr. J, Bobby Jones, Wilt Chamberlain, Allen Iverson, Charles Barkley, and more—pictured in action on the court and in service to the community.

From Dougherty’s original design to a paint day with students from Belmont Charter School, to a 600-person paint day outside of City Hall during the 2016 Democratic National Convention, to Martinez’s final brush strokes, the mural is truly community-made. 76ers: Beyond the Court is installed at the intersection of Broad and Federal, at center court between Center City and the South Philadelphia sports stadiums, where it will be seen by thousands every day.
