Robert Wood Johnson Foundation highlights Porch Light

by: RJ Rushmore

Last week the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation released a video highlighting Porch Light, a collaboration between Mural Arts Philadelphia and the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation shadowed participants working on a mural with Porch Light at Sobriety Through Outpatient (S.T.O.P.), an agency providing services in the areas of mental health, and drug & alcohol outpatient in North Philadelphia. Last year, participants at S.T.O.P. designed and painted the Our Vision, Our Testament mural on S.T.O.P.’s headquarters at 2534 N. Broad Street.

Porch Light is a great example of how Mural Arts sets itself apart as more than just another public art program putting up art wherever they can find space. As Mural Arts Philadelphia executive director Jane Golden says in the video, “The mural is a byproduct. What we’re involved in is social transformation, and the vehicle we use is art.”

Here’s the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s video about the Porch Light Program:
