January Highlights at Mural Arts

by: Carly Rapaport-Stein

2015 was a big year. We reached new heights with our projects, programs, art, and participation – but that doesn’t mean we’re slowing down now that we’ve flipped the page to 2016. We’ve got fun things planned to beat back the winter blues, so read on to discover what’s in store for January!

Lend your hand at a paint day

On January 9 and 30, spend your Saturday afternoons being creative with us! We’re working on a new mural for the Al-Aqsa Islamic Center, and you can stop by between 4 and 6 to help paint. Details are here, and more about the history of the project is here.

See the Mural Training Program’s annual exhibition

The word to describe this year’s mural training class is diverse. From their artistic backgrounds to to their styles to their ages (early 20s to late 70s!), you don’t want to miss this class of fifteen as they exhibit their beautiful work. The exhibition will be on view at the Thomas Eakins House from January 13 through February 26, with a free opening reception from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm on Wednesday, January 13.

Learn about your neighbors in South Philadelphia

The diverse voices of South Philly are illuminated through this photography exhibition at our Southeast by Southeast Hub space. Partnering with PhillyCAM (Philadelphia Community Access Media), teenagers photographed and interviewed community residents. Visit the exhibit on January 16 to learn more about their insights and discover the powerful stories of immigration, hope, and change in their neighborhood.

Explore connections between art and mental health

On January 26 and 27 from 12 pm – 2 pm, come paint alongside artist Candy Chang (creator of the “Before I Die” mural series). She’s hard at work on The Big I-Ching, a mural that’s been created in collaboration with DBHIDS and Mural Arts.

You can catch Candy in conversation with Dr. Geoffrey Neimark, Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbilities Services, at Giovanni’s Room on January 28, as they discuss where we seek emotional refuge within our community. You can also join us at Broad Street Ministries on January 29 for Candy’s Collection, an entertaining, introspective evening that seeks out paths of self-discovery.

Visit La Colombe, Yards, and Shake Shack

These three Philly favorites teamed up to create and sell a special brew – and the proceeds benefit Mural Arts. Toast 2016 with the new Coffee Stout at Yards, La Colombe, or Shake Shack!
