Sonia Sanchez’s Peace is a Haiku Song Mural Rededication and Bench Design Unveiling

Join us in celebrating a living legend, poet Sonia Sanchez, as part of her 90th birthday festivities! Mural Arts proudly present the rededication of the Peace is a Haiku Song mural, beautifully restored by Felix St. Fort, along with the unveiling of a stunning bench design by artist Anthony Carlos Molden, featuring one of Dr. Sanchez’s powerful Peace Haikus. This bench will later be installed at Vernon Park near the Black Writers Museum in Germantown. The event will feature inspiring haikus shared by students from the High School for Creative and Performing Arts, guided by poet Ursula Rucker, and birthday celebrations with poet and artist Danny Simmons.

Poet, Playwright, Professor, and Activist Sonia Sanchez is an international treasure and icon. Her teaching, mentorship, activism, lifestyle, and commitment to her craft have impacted countless people worldwide and in Philadelphia, where she has lived for nearly 50 years. A committee of family, friends, students, and collaborators have come together to plan celebratory events during her birthday month, September 2024.
