Mural Dedication: Spring Garden Bridge

Betsy Casañas’ new mural on the Spring Garden Street Bridge is a collaboration between Mural Arts Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Mantua Civic Association. The Spring Garden Bridge holds a special place in our heart: It’s the site of Mural Arts’ very first foray into public art. The new design for this well-traveled bridge is led and implemented by artist Betsy Casañas. Over the summer of 2016 and the spring of 2017, students at Freire Charter School and members of the community helped Casañas and her team paint the mural, which blossoms with tulips, a flower that holds significance for the neighboring Mantua community. The bridge will also feature vibrant images drawn from traditional Mexican muralism, inspired by the PMA’s major fall 2016 exhibition, Paint the Revolution: Mexican Modernism, 1910–1950.
