Mural Dedication – Richard Allen

Join us for a July 4th celebration and mural dedication

In partnership with the bicentennial celebration of the First Episcopal District – A.M.E. Church, Mural Arts has helped to create a mural honoring the church’s founder, Bishop Richard Allen. The mural, designed by lead muralist Willis “Nomo” Humphrey will be installed on the church’s world headquarters in West Philadelphia.

The dedication will feature food, music, and fun for all ages.

The A.M.E Church is the oldest independent Protestant denomination founded by blacks in the world. It is considered the first peaceful protest, where black Methodist leaders walked out of St. George’s Methodist Church to form their own independent congregation due to racial segregation during worship service. The A.M.E. Church continues to be involved in social justice issues with a footprint in 5 continents and 39 nations.
