Mural Dedication: Bloom

Join us to dedicate Bloom, a mural created by artist Benjamin Volta with assistance from artist Russell Craig and members of the Youth Violence Reduction Partnership (YVRP) Guild.

Bloom, installed on the parking lot wall of a Great Valu grocery store at 5406 Chester Avenue in the Kingsessing neighborhood in Southwest Philadelphia, depicts a blossoming branch. Hundreds of drawings intertwine across the 166-foot mural to form the single branch and its flowers, each image reflecting an aspect of “home.”

In the center of the mural a small bird, constructed out of keys, balances delicately in the tension between freedom and responsibility. Do the keys give it power and freedom to open the doors in the blossoms, or are the keys weighing it down? Each community, with all its doors, keys, locks, and walls, can be forbidding when we are unsure whether we belong, but always holds the potential for connection, belonging, and growth. Connect with us as we dedicate this meaningful mural on October 24.
