Monument Lab: Creative Speculations for Philadelphia

Monument Lab: Creative Speculations for Philadelphia is a public art and urban research project taking place this Spring from May 15 – June 7. Through a series of art installations, public events, and community-sourced maps, the project asks a central guiding question: What is an appropriate monument for the current city of Philadelphia?

The project will allow for the exploration of answers through an interactive research pavilion located outside of City Hall, and a prototype monument, described as “a reflection on the history of educational innovation and loss in Philadelphia,” by renowned artist Terry Adkins.

The project will aslo include a Creative Speculator Speakers Series hosted by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where Philadelphia artists Zoe Strauss, Kara Crombie, Alexander Rosenberg, and WE THE WEEDS propose speculative monuments for the city using William Penn’s iconic plan for the city’s five public squares as inspiration.

Major support for Monument Lab has been provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage with partners including Penn Institute for Urban Research, Mural Arts Philadelphia, Haverford College, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, PennDesign, the Philadelphia Center for Architecture, and RAIR.

The Center for Architecture will host an exhibition of the results of the project as part of the 11th annual DesignPhiladelphia Festival happening this October.
