Afromation Avenue 2024 Curator/Artists Walk Project Walk

Following the murder of George Floyd, two Black Philadelphia-based educators initiated a small project aimed at fostering moments of joy within our school communities as our students struggled to grapple with the continued brutality against Black individuals. Together they crafted a two-volume series designed to promote self-love, celebrate Black culture, and voice as a means to inspire and empower our learners. In efforts to extend their vision beyond the classroom, Brittni and Kristin developed a public art project “Afromation Avenue” designed to preserve the cultural integrity of Black spaces in Philadelphia. In collaboration with local Black artists and community members, personalized positive affirmation street signs find a permanent home within the landscape of their communities. Street signs are used to guide and regulate the traffic flow of people; they assist in helping others get from one familiar place to another. Afromation Avenue lends itself as a social emotional guide in hopes of cultivating spaces of reflective thought and conversation while honoring the cultural identity of each community.Through creative placemaking Afromation Avenue works to nurture environments where our stories are heard, our communities are seen, and our joy is felt.
