Salsa Shines Through

by: Phil Asbury, Project Manager

Introducing Salsa Shines Through, a pop-up mural project celebrating salsa dancing in times of social distancing. The project is a collaboration between Dance Instructor/Painter Andres Giraldo, Estilo Dance Studio, MAP Staff Artist Nathaniel Lee and dancers from the Philadelphia salsa community. Salsa Shines Through is a small homage to salsa dancing, a cultural phenomenon that continues to bring joy and self care to people all over the world, despite the disruption of the pandemic.

“Salsa shines” is a term used to describe the footwork performed when dancing solo. It’s also quite often used when an instructor warms up a class before starting, and widely used when performing a dance routine. The project will use “shines,” aka video dance clips, submitted by the public as source content for a mural to be designed by Giraldo and installed in Philadelphia.

Here’s how you can be a part of the project!

Instructions:

  1. Create your version of Watson and Katy’s Beginner Salsa routine, which is featured on the Mural Arts Instagram page, or Andres’s Intermediate routine, posted on the Salsa Shines Through Instagram page
  2. Record yourself doing the routine and send it to salsashines@muralarts.org by March 30th, 2021
  3. We’ll post your routine on Instagram, as well as use the routines to create a mural that will be installed in Summer 2021
All ages and skill levels welcome. Happy dancing!
