Jane Golden Awarded Philadelphia Magazine's Trailblazer Award

by: Steve Weinik

Last Friday, Mural Arts Executive Director Jane Golden was presented with Philadelphia Magazine‘s Trailblazer Award, in recognition of her lifelong dedication to public art in Philadelphia. The award has been given since 2005 to honor women who “epitomize excellence in their field or community” and to spotlight leaders who are shaping our region’s future.

Golden accepted the honor during a private lunch at XIX in Center City attended byPhiladelphia Magazine leadership, previous Trailblazer Award winners, and representatives from the award’s sponsors.

In her acceptance speech, Golden traced her personal and professional history and how it has shaped the growth of Mural Arts for more than three decades. She also reflected on women in Philadelphia communities who give meaning and purpose to that work.

“These women are the unsung heroes and trailblazers of our city,” Golden said at the event. “I learned from them as they incorporated our artistic skills into their vision for the community improvement. Through these experiences I saw that not only could murals tell stories, but they could also contribute directly to the spirit of renewal in the city. I saw that the work we did together went far beyond the paint and into the deeper fabric of the community.”
