by: Jenny Donnelly Johnson

Worth Rises, the Cabbagetown Initiative in Atlanta, GA and Mural Arts Philadelphia will dedicate the first mural from the nationwide End the Exception public art project in Atlanta, Georgia’s Cabbagetown historic district. The first in a series of murals installed across the country focused on “ending the exception,” the public art project shines a light on a loop-hole in the 13th Amendment of The Constitution that, although it abolished slavery, permits slavery for incarcerated people and others convicted of a crime. The dedication takes place Saturday, September 2 from 4-6pm, 97 Estoria, 727 Wylie St SE, Atlanta, GA 30316.

This mural, to be dedicated in Atlanta, was created collaboratively by formerly incarcerated artists Preston Townsend, Sarah Corley, and Amiti Bey, with additional work by tattoo artist Juan Alexander. The dedication will feature words from formerly incarcerated AOUON – GA partners, participants and members including AOUON – GA Chapter Lead, activist and filmmaker Waleisah Wilson, law student John Marshall, activist Luci Harrel, activist and media specialist Page Dukes, leader and coalition strategist Tanika Nicholas, leader Jessica Umberger, and the mural artists. In addition, Amiti Bey will perform a short monologue entitled “Industrial Strength.”

Additional murals in this series will be coming to cities including Philadelphia, Austin & Houston, Jersey City, NJ, Los Angeles, and New York City. End the Exception is a national public art project by Worth Rises and Mural Arts.
