About the Project

In 2015, the Philadelphia Federal Credit Union (PFCU) and Mural Arts held a public contest to design a new mural for 2300 Frankford Avenue. The standout winners were local artists Jeffro Kilpatrick and Brad Carney. The two artists (and longtime friends) collaborated to create Welcome to the Neighborhood.

Public paint days were held throughout the process, allowing neighbors and friends to lend a hand in the creation of the mural.

“Over 2,000 people helped make this mural possible by voting for the design concept and artist or participating in a paint day. Now we’re here to welcome this wonderful piece of art to the neighborhood.”

- Karen Eavis, Communication Specialist at PFCU

Mural Arts and PFCU held a series of public paint days during the creation of the mural. Photo by Steve Weinik.

Borrowing from Kilpatrick’s Sketches of Fishtown series, the mural features a collage of Fishtown people and places, new and old. Portraits include: Conrad Benner of the Streets Dept, Darla Jackson of the Philadelphia Sculpture Gym, Ariell Johnson of Amalgam Comics, and many more.
