About the Project
We’re celebrating our immigrant, migrant, and refugee communities through photography, writing, and murals, with this new project from artist Shira Walinsky. Since 2011, Walinsky has been at work on projects within these communities in Southeast Philadelphia through Southeast by Southeast, a neighborhood hub space for art activities and social services.
For Migration Nation, a mobile photo studio will travel through Northeast and South Philadelphia, collecting portraits and stories of immigrants, migrants, and refugees—building a composite portrait of these communities in Philadelphia. The portraits and writing will be exhibited in windows along Castor and Snyder Avenues, and the photoshoot backdrops will be repurposed as colorful murals in Northeast and Southeast Philadelphia, coming soon!
