Staten Island-based artist Tattfoo Tan has been conducting workshops with a fantastic group of middle school students at Mural Arts’ Southeast by Southeast storefront, as well as high school students from Sayre High School in West Philly since October 2014.  The workshop series has focused on food justice and accessibility, learning and practicing how to cook, and “do-it-yourself” tips for survival in the 21st century. Participants have made mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, and different types of fruit and vegetable juices — all from scratch — with the central goal of giving young people an opportunity to reflect on where their food comes from, eat more nutritiously, and practice and promote healthy eating habits for themselves, family, and friends.

The collaboration will culminate in the creation of an exciting new mural project composed of color squares that correspond to different fruits and vegetables. With the motto “Remember to take your daily dose of color,” Tattfoo is reminding us that the more color we have in our diet, the healthier we become.
